I have understood his plan to be that the Troll kills Hermione, because she is a "bad" influence on Harry, but after he learns of the Prophecy about Harry destroying the world (because he was with Trelawney at the time) he tries to save Hermione because he realizes that losing Hermione could cause Harry to become a danger for the world.
